Strengthening The Back

Following the last back herniation I experienced, I have spent a great deal of time focusing on what I can do to both protect my back and return to an active and competitive lifestyle.  If like me you have experienced a back injury you will know both how painful it is and how scared it makes you feel.

The fear in my experience is the biggest hurdle I have had to overcome.  Even today I have not committed to returning to Martial Arts training for the fear of a sudden move or twist landing me quite literally on my back and in pain.

I have spent a great deal of time understanding my movement and with the aid of training philosophy from the Foundation Training team I have been able to strengthen my back to the point that I can push myself hard and enjoy sports.

I am a fan of Yoga and enjoy the dynamic strength it builds, but before I spent time with the Foundation Training team and spent more time developing my understanding and awareness of movement I was constantly confused how some days Yoga seemed good for me and on other days it seemed to set me back.   That all became clear as I developed my understanding around hinging the body in the right place and avoiding twists that put stain on the very areas of my back that were weakest as a result of the herniation.

What I have learnt the hard way is that whilst we might spend time pushing ourselves hard with the notion of training for short bursts either to lose weight or get strong, it is actually how we carry ourselves and move throughout the day that shapes our body and sets us up for that sudden catastrophic failure that we struggle to understand how it could have happened.  I know that went through my head when my back went out playing XBOX connect.

Today I have progressed from the couch in pain, through regular gym and yoga workouts, to certified Student Foundation trainer and I have started a journey to achieve the goal of Bicycle Road Racing next year.  The journey has started and I have participated in Cyclocross races this season (you can see what I have been up to at www.maxlifeout.com.

Strengthening the posterior chain is something that benefits us all regardless of your fitness and level of health.   I work with both athletes and non athletes of all ages and the ability to share my knowledge and provide tools that make myself and stronger allowing us face the challenges of the day and be stronger and better and the sports we love.

I encourage you to do your own research and not just take my word for it.  Here is a picture comparison of my back from 2011 to 2013.  Notice the definition difference in the low back and muscles along the spine.

BTW the weight lose is not associated with the training.  Training makes you stronger but it is not a weight lose program.  My wife helped me lose 50+ lbs by changing our diet lifestyle.  If you would like to learn more feel free to contact me.

Foundation Training Launched - Today

Firstly I want thank Dr Sean Fryer for agreeing to host the training program at his clinic in Issaquah.  The Balance Spine provides an alignment and learning service to their patients that is synergistic with the values and principles of "Foundation Training".  Put simply Dr Fryer provides alignment and I provide the movement tools you can use to keep yourself aligned.  We also share a common belief that you are empowered to manage your life and well being.  I encourage you to take a look at his service.  He has been an inspiration to me since I first meet him over 4 years ago and no less so now with his progressive focus on the well being of his patients - Thank You

Announcement: Group Training 10/26 - Confirmed

I am really excited to announce that following a number of enquires into group classes I have identified a location and developed a 6 week training plan.  I initially considered structured classes based on drop in attendance but decided against the approach as the value in Foundation Training is being able to learn and deepen the experience through repetition, intensity, layers and new movement.

To that end I have created two 6 week classes (see Training Outline & Pricing link above)

I want to thank "The Balanced Spine" in Issaquah for partnering with me and the first class with be this coming Saturday 9am (see Location link above)

As this will be my first week I will run both Saturday and Thursday as beginner sessions with a  discounted $20 drop in rate with no obligation to sign up for a six week program.

(future classes will require a minimum of 3 confirmations to ensure training is available)
